Foxes are smaller than their Canidae cousins, jackals and wolves, but larger than raccoon dogs. The red fox is the largest species, measuring 35-50 cm at the shoulders, while the smallest is the fennec fox, which stands 20 cm. The weight varies by species, with the heaviest being 4-9 kg and the lightest being 0.7-1.6 kg. Foxes vary in colour from black to pearly white and spotted black, with a grey or white underside. Their jaw has 42 teeth: 3/3 incisors, 1/1 canines, 4/4 premolars, and 3/2 molars. Foxes have black whiskers on their muzzle, head, and forelimbs that measure an average of 1.6 inches long.
